Entrevista/ Interview

Nowadays, anyone knows a Youtuber or vlogger that talk about nerd/geek culture. Sebastian Nguyen, known as ThatGuyYouKnowww, is a cosplayer and vlogger based in Vancouver, Canada, and talks about video games, animes, filmes and, yet, covers the conventions in a very unique way: with special effects! xD He gave us an interview, where he tells us about his ideas for videos and gives tips for those who want to follow this path.

Taís/Tonikaku: Internet is a media that people can express themselves in a creative way, reaching people with the same interests. Talk about your beginning on web and how it lead you to be a vlogger.

ThatGuyYouKnowww: My interest in vlogging and YouTube started about 4 years ago when I was just interested in sharing my interests and making people laugh. I watched popular YouTubers like nigahiga, freddiew and Wong Fu Productions and I always loved how much fun they had while making their videos. Not long after that, I made my first vlog about "what should I do on YouTube?" with several of my friends telling me how much they enjoyed listening to me ramble. From that moment, the channel known as ThatGuyYouKnowww was born!

Para séries de TV, eu absolutamente amo Doctor Who, Arrow e The Flash.

Taís/Tonikaku: Have you always liked animes, series and geek stuff? Which one are your favorites animes and shows?

ThatGuyYouKnowww: Ever since I was a kid, I've always been a huge geek which I blame my dad for lol. My dad was a big fan of Batman growing up and would record episodes of the Batman animated series for me on VHS. As I got older, I found Dragon Ball Z and Gundam Wing which brought me into the wonderful world of anime! It was like nothing I'd ever seen before and I've been an anime fan ever since. At the moment, I'd have to say my favourite animes are the Gundam series, the Studio Ghibli movies (Spirited Away in particular) and Fairy Tail. For TV series, I absolutely love Doctor Who, Arrow and The Flash.

Taís/Tonikaku: Your sketches are very creative and well-made. How is your creative process, from the first idea to production?

ThatGuyYouKnowww: I'd like to say a lot of my video sketches are the result of careful planning and preparation but the truth is a lot of my ideas come from random thoughts haha. I've always loved bringing a new twist on an old idea. For example, I'll take an existing idea such as Pokemon and think, "what if the Pokemon trainers were dragged into a fight themselves?" I'm also a big fan of martial art movies so all of a sudden I get this idea of "what if there was a crossover of Pokemon and Street Fighter?" From there I'll start scripting and story boarding action scenes while also recruiting my very talented friends to be my actors whom I can't thank enough for all the support. After that its all a matter of finding a cool location, setting a date and shooting the sketch while always making sure everyone is having fun. People having fun means a fun video!

É claramente baseado em Heroes of Cosplay.

Taís/Tonikaku: The Zeroes of Cosplays videos are very funny! It is clearly based on Heroes of Cosplay. What do you think of this very polemic series? To you, what is most important in a cosplay? Having fun making the clothing and props and going to the cons with your friends or doing something that you can win a contest with?

ThatGuyYouKnowww: Thank you! my friends and I had a lot of fun making the Zeroes of Cosplay videos haha. To be honest, Heroes of Cosplay was a guilty pleasure of mine and I did watch both seasons of the show out of pure curiosity. It was mostly because I loved seeing the process and dedication cosplayers have to their craft and at the end of the day the show really didn't need all the excess drama in my opinion. Cosplayers should always remember the "play" in "cosplay" because it really is about having fun and being creative! In my opinion, the most important thing about cosplay is celebrating your fandom with your friends!

Taís/Tonikaku: There's another videos that called our attention, the ones covering the cons. It's amazing the fact you put special effects to improve the cosplays! To you, which are the positive and negative points of this cons? Which event is your favorite?

ThatGuyYouKnowww: I think its safe to say that we've all imagined ourselves with super powers before. To this day I still pretend I can shoot fireballs from my hands haha. As a result, It was just really fun to bring these characters to life with special effects and the cosplayers seem to love it as well! As for the conventions themselves, some of the negative things include etiquette to people in general. Cosplayers are human beings so treat them as such! Its always good to ask before taking pictures and thank them afterwards. Remember to stay polite and respectful to people at the convention whether they are the staff, cosplayers or vendors. On a positive note, I absolutely love the community of these conventions. Everyone is always excited to talk about the newest animes or teaser trailers for upcoming movies and video games. Conventions are definitely a place where you can proudly say that you are a geek (or nerd)! So far I'd have to say my favourite convention would be Sakura Con in Seattle.

Taís/Tonikaku: From all the cosplays you've seen till today, which one you liked the most?

ThatGuyYouKnowww: Out of all the cosplays that I have seen, the one cosplay that I never forgot was an optimus prime cosplay that actually transformed! His costume even had wheels that he could roll around on, it actually inspired me to make my first transformers costume out of cardboard haha.

Taís/Tonikaku: Você é fã de Back to the Future e Doctor Who (ambos abordam viagens no tempo).

Taís/Tonikaku: You are a Back to the Future and Doctor Who fan ( both talk about time travels). The expectation for 2015 was the hoverboard and we finished with the selfie stick :( If you had a DeLorean and could go 30 years into the future, what do you think you'd find on geek scenery?

ThatGuyYouKnowww: Great question! if I had a DeLorean (or a TARDIS!) and traveled 30 years into the future, I think I'd still see a very big geek scene only with more intricate and complex costumes. I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing Iron man costumes that actually fly! or costumes that use hologram technology (I wish). If anything, I can imagine future geeks actually engineering their own Baymax robots from Big Hero 6 with full A.I. or their own JARVIS systems. However, its always been a dream to pilot a giant mecha so lets start seeing those in the future! I mean we already have 3D printers that can print almost anything so in the words of Doctor Emmett Brown, in 30 years time we're gonna see some serious sh*t!

Taís/Tonikaku: To a near future, which are your expectations as a vlogger? Can you tell us about your next projects?

ThatGuyYouKnowww: In the near future, I'm hoping to continue vlogging about conventions and the geek community to a wider audience. I would love to one day be invited down as a guest at conventions sharing my experience with vlogging and filmmaking. I have a few projects in mind that I'm really excited to start scripting such as a Mega Man sketch, a Star wars fan film as well as covering more conventions throughout the year.

Taís/Tonikaku: What kind of tips you could give to the people who do videos, covering cons or doing sketches, so they can do better videos?

ThatGuyYouKnowww: My advice to those that want to start making videos is to keep practicing and enjoy what you're doing. When starting out, don't expect your first couple of videos to be masterpieces as its all about the growth and evolution of your craft. Connect with other content creators and collaborate because its a lot of fun when you have a group of people behind a project. Keep watching other YouTuber's content because you'll always learn something new by watching those who inspire you. At the end of the day, be proud of whatever videos you create and share it as much as you can because its your art, your vision and your chance in the spotlight!
